We’re about 9 days away from the tipoff of the NCAA basketball tournament and thus far no indication from Mark Emmert that the coronavirus will stop them (whereas the Ivy League just announced that it would play its tourney sans fans). Is the NCAA tournament going to go an as if nothing is different? Oh, and why are we so fixated on that while NBA games continue apace, as do spring training MLB games?
Anyway, we conjured and NCAA tourney with no fans and how it might affect everyone’s favorite montage vehicle, “One Shining Moment.” Here are two openings, one from a Twitter friend and one from us:
What percentage of March Madness revenue for the NCAA comes from the people in the stands vs the TV broadcast contract? Of course, the owners of the arenas would take the biggest hit unless the NCAA shares the TV money with them.
As for all the hand-wringing about playing before empty arenas – heck, just pretend basketball games are REAL Olympic sports & they’re playing in Doha, where various Olympic sports organizations send their World Championships. The paltry & embarrassing attendance doesn’t seem to bother the various sports orgs as they count their money.
62%
That figure may or may not be wrong. I have no idea. I just felt obliged to answer your question.
I thought you might know. I’d guess that 95% of the revenue comes from the TV contract – isn’t it worth BILLIONS? If every seat in every arena for every March Madness game cost $1000, you still wouldn’t get to even one BILLION.
Does my “magic” with math qualify me for a job at the NYT or MSNBC? 😉
