Biden, His Time

Grampa Joe wins the primary in South Cackalacka…. Biden versus Bernie? The Dems need to mass-produce baseball caps inscribed with “Make America Gray Again.”

Mulaney Knocks It Out Of The Park—Again

For a third time in less than two years, John Mulaney returned to his old haunts at 30 Rock to host Saturday Night Live, And, as with his other two hosting gigs, the sketches were sharper and funnier. And Mulaney has an affection for old Hollywood. The first time he hosted, he and Kate McKinnon did a send-up of To Have And Have Not’s iconic scene (“You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve?”). This time he and Cecily Strong sent up a famous tune from The Sound Of Music.

Speaking Of Knocking It Out Of The Park…

Mike Trout is ready for the Pebble Beach pro-am, and probably for baseball season, too. This ball was likely launched at Top Golf in Gilbert, Ariz., and if you’re familiar with the area, then it probably landed in Apache Junction or ricocheted off Superstition Mountain.

How Big Is The B1G?

Hawkeye center Luke Garza has been the B1G’s top player this season. At least he’s big.

In the latest AP poll we’ve seen, the Big Ten placed six schools in the Top 25: Maryland (9), Penn State (16), Iowa (18), Michigan (19), Ohio State (23) and Michigan State (24). A few oddities about that:

–In the preseason rankings, the last school on the above list, Sparty, was ranked No. 1 overall in the nation.

–Two schools that are 3rd and 4th in the league standings, respectively, Illinois and Wisconsin, did not crack the Top 25.

–Six teams in the Top 25, but none in the top eight.

–The best school in the Midwest this season, both by record (25-2) and the rankings? Dayton. The best player in the Midwest? Markus Howard. Neither are affiliated with the B1G.

–Are any of these B1G schools Final Four material? Will any of them even get a No. 1 seed? It seems anathema that a conference with six ranked teams couldn’t place its conference champ as a No. 1 seed, but this might just be the year. We’ll see if the committee favors the outliers with the great records (Gonzaga, SDSU, Dayton, etc.) or goes with more traditional Power 5 schools. Maybe Kirk Herbstreit will be asked to weigh in.

  1. I actually meant to watch SNL since your fave Mulaney was hosting but I fell asleep on the sofa. Dagnabit! Does Mulaney write his own sketches when he guest-hosts? Were there any sketches showing Wall Streeters jumping out of windows after the Week from Hell? I actually realized that my 401-k lost more on paper last week than back in 2008 when at the bottom, my 401k-k had dropped 52% over an 8-MONTH stretch. Owwwww! It all happened SO fast that I can’t quite digest it. (Yes, my 401-k grew a LOT over the past 11 years but I didn’t need to actually live out “the bigger they are the harder they fall” to know it’s true! Sigh).

Anyhoo, I did have a laugh when I got home Friday night : in my mailbox was a glossy, 10 inch brochure from Princess Cruises. You know, the cruise line in the news for the past 2 weeks about the ship in Japan under Coronavirus quarantine? And wouldn’t you know, one of the cruises being advertised was the one in Japan. WHY would this company send out that unsolicited brochure NOW?! Especially to someone who did not sign up online to be sent one? Which got me wondering how much of a financial hit that company will take. I’m thinking at the very least, they will have to DEEP DISCOUNT cruises for the next 4-6 months. Even then, they may “go under” (er, can’t help myself) if they are not financially strong. In fact, I’m guessing the entire travel & entertainment sectors will take massive financial hits this year. It’s fitting that “COVID-19” was named sort of like a hurricane as that will be the affect on tourist-based countries. UNLESS it “swerves at the last minute & goes out to sea” which in this case means it dies out quickly when the weather warms up.

  2. Oh, also – after you posted about 1932 films last week, I looked at the list on Wikipedia. I have seen more than you but not as much as I’ve seen of films after 1933 & boy, there are a LOT I’d like to see! Pre-1934 (I think) was before the Censorship code was enacted & going by many of the plots, these movies were quite “racy”! Heck, even the costumes were MUCH more revealing than one would think for an era roughly only 15 years from when women wore corsets & floor-length dresses.
