Honestly, it was not easy getting to five this year. As an explanation, I have not seen The Master nor Silver Linings Playbook. Did not like, like at all, Moonrise Kingdom or Django Unchained. I understand that Beasts of the Southern Wild was supposed to be transcendent— I just didn’t get it. Please feel free to add to the list.
- Argo: A deserving Best Picture winner, written like a classic Shakespeare play. There’s drama about but taking the edge off are the two fools, here played by Alan Arkin and John Goodman, who are also actually heroic. You don’t think this deserves to occupy the top spot? Argo f*ck yourself!
- Zero Dark Thirty: Jessica Chastain as the female CIA operative who helped take down Osama bin Laden. Suspenseful and less testosterone than most post-9/11 Patriot Act-level films.
- Lincoln: Daniel Day Lewis as our 16th president.
- The Queen of Versailles: What do you get when you mix Florida, overindulgent opulence, a trophy wife and a time-share scam? The perfect zeitgeist documentary.
- Les Miserables: Another Katie-Mccollow-fave-that-must-be-included-lest-I-lose-calling-privileges nod.
Sorry, jdubs but I do not like the new format. 🙁
What do YOU think of ‘Parasite’ the movie (& not the current infestation of our nation’s government…)? Is it REALLY that good? I’d never even heard of it until last week & checked the plot on, er, Wikipedia & I’m not f*ckin surprised at ALL that it won as it seems just ONE MORE OSCAR BEST PICTURE TRAVESTY following the now well-trod path of crap that has been much of the past 6-7 years or so! (However, it’s probably not as bad as when Shakespeare in Love ‘beat’ Saving Private Ryan, which, er , ‘takes the Oscar’ for biggest BP travesty).
I finally saw The Shape of Water & Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, MO yesterday on FX (on TV). Except for the “sex with a fish-man” (which was not actually seen at all & don’t know if FX just cut it out or it was never actually seen in the film), I was completely surprised by the 1st movie. It was ok but Best Picture?! ARE THEY FREAKIN KIDDING?!
And the 3 Billboards flick – yah, yah, McDormand & Sam Rockwell were excellent (so was Woody) but the EXCESSIVE utterance of the word “f*ck” (seriously, did this movie set a record? I’ve heard less cursing in military flicks!) got old real quickly for me. Yeah, ME, a person whom one could say was on a ‘1st-name basis’ with a curse word or ten! (Actually, on FX, the curse words are CHANGED with “non-offensive substitutes” so I’m just assuming the unedited movie contained the real thing). BOTH are distracting. I can’t decide how I feel about this movie – McDormand’s jump suited (er, why?) character was so unlikeable that it was difficult to feel empathy. And then the despicable deputy Dixon (Rockwell) sort of becomes a GOOD GUY at the end? Anyhoo, the entire time I watched this movie I kept thinking that the majority of inhabitants in the “red states” are just like the characters in this movie & the “Hollywood” folks who vote for Best Picture are the type who vote for The Shape of Water, Parasite, Moonlight & can there be a better example of how our country seems to have almost NOTHING in common at the moment? And sorry Renee, not even our “heroes”. Except possibly Patrick Mahomes; whose future career can be “country’s healer”. 🙂
Didn’t you really like ‘1917’? And one final question – do you think the BP winner just MIGHT have gotten the nod because of the blowback (once again) of “oscarssoowhite” & NO nominated female directors? “You want diversity, WE’LL show ya some diversity!”
Gee, Susie B., I’d really hate to lose your, um… business.
Hated 3 Billboards as I have often said. Extremely phony.
As for last night, I liked 1917 better than Parasite but it didn’t feel like an egregious slight. And yes, there’s definitely a movement afoot about diversity and this was the movie to vote for if you feel strongly. Film could be called “Crazy Rich And Poor Asians.”
Give the format time. You’ll actually get more material at more times of day. Or you can choose not to read all of it. Easy, see?
